Stubborn drop that is much better when decanted from a height to release fistful of black fruit & freshly lit cigars.
Discovered on a Humble team trip to Portugal in 2019 who came back raving about this stubborn and tannic drop. Notoriously known for producing basic plonk, Baga has enjoyed a revival amongst Portugal emerging wine rockstars and only when the growing season is perfect, Maria will produce this rare wine onyx and ages 24 months in 500-litre barrels. An enigmatic wine that shows off glamourous black plums, black cherry, liquorice, and freshly lit cigars. Need Maria’s Baga in a lickety-split? We recommend you pour from a height in a decanter to allow for those chalky tannins to mellow and for you to score wine-pouring-from-a-height brownie points.
This wine exhibits an intense ruby color with concentrated aromas of high-quality oak, complemented by notes of red fruits and a touch of game. On the palate, it is elegant and vigorous, featuring fine tannins and a well-balanced structure, leading to a complex and lingering finish.
Álvaro Castro and his daughter Maria are widely acknowledged as being the leading producers in Portugal's Dão region, known as the Burgundy of Portugal because of the elegance of its wines. Álvaro was a civil engineer who inherited the family property in 1980. The farm has been in existence since the 16th Century, but only started making its own wines under Álvaro, prior to this its grapes were sold for blending.
