Discovered as a variety in 1988 by accident by a guy named Jesus - divine coincidence? We think not.
Tempranillo Blanco was discovered in 1988 by a winegrower in a Tempranillo vineyard near Murillo de Río Leza in the La Rioja province of northern Spain. While Tempranillo is a dark-skinned variety used to produce red wine, the grower discovered that one of his vines had undergone a mutation, producing yellow-green clusters after veraison.
The 2023 Tempranillo Blanco displays a pale yellow colour with golden hues. The nose offers a mixture of citrus and fruit notes, complemented by small touches of honey, mint, cedar, and minerality. On the palate, it has great structure with volume and length, showcasing refreshing citrus and tropical fruit flavours balanced by the complexity of subtle spice and a refined finish.
Juan Bautista Garcia (the "young man" as he describes himself), is Paco's son, after taking the reins at the Bodegas he started to wonder why young people, like him, had stopped buying and drinking wine. To answer this generational decline in consumption, Juan turned the family business into a R&D project, setting out to answer the age-old question, how does one find a likeable, attractive wine, which people can enjoy, that he would like and that would allow him to make a living from his passion!
