Most of the vines used for this would have got their letter from the Queen already.
Many wineries claim “old vines”, but this puts them all to shame. Most of the centenarian vines used to make this wine would have received a letter from Her Majesty the Queen if they had been British.
The J.M. Fuentes Gran Clos estate is planted with vines aged up to 100 years. Winemaker Josep Angel Mestre hails from nearby Falset, considered the ‘capital’ of DOCa Priorat. Arid, rugged, and nearly surrounded by the cliffs of nearby Montsant Mountains, the region is famed for its licorella soils comprised of black slate and shale rock.
