Super boutique Carignan from 70-year-old vines, made by Roland and Anne-Marie.
This wine is what Humble Grape is all about: super-boutique and highly unusual. Racine means 'root' and the roots of these 70 year old Carignan vines have had to dig in deep to sustain their vines. The team have to work as hard as the vines as the surroundings are harsh, but they don't irrigate, pest control is done naturally and all harvesting is done by hand. The result is bags of complexity in the fruit and rich concentration, but unfortunately extremely low yields, so we only ever get a handful of bottles.
The 2021 Racine Carignan displays a deep ruby color with aromas of ripe black fruits, spices, and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, it is rich and supple, offering flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and a hint of pepper, leading to a smooth, lingering finish.
Anne-Marie and Roland Coustal took the reigns of this tiny 12 hectare estate in 2001 from Anne-Marie's parents Lucette and Georges, hence the name. George was selling his grapes to a cooperative, but Anne-Marie and Roland thought the vineyards deserved the limelight of their own label. They are located in the heart of Minervois country mid-way between Narbonne and Carcassonne, in a region known as Balcon de l'Aude.
