Black pepper, blackberry & silky tannins. A bombardment of the senses.
Syrah and Grenache handpicked from 20-year-old vines grown on chalk soils and gravel terraces in the heart of Minervois country, midway between Narbonne and Carcassonne in the region known as Balcon de L'Aude. Fermented and aged for 8-10 months in large format seasoned French oak, this wine is bottled without fining or filtration, so expect oodles of purity and a small, but harmless, sediment.
The 2020 Quintessence has a deep, dense colour, with aromas of sweet spices, mocha, and violet. On the palate, it offers ripe fruit flavours with a touch of pepper and well-extracted tannins, leading to a smooth, elegant finish. Subtle spicy oak, black pepper, blackberry. Rich and supple with ripe, spicy raisined fruit.
Anne-Marie and Roland Coustal took the reigns of this tiny 12 hectare estate in 2001 from Anne-Marie's parents Lucette and Georges, hence the name. George was selling his grapes to a cooperative, but Anne-Marie and Roland thought the vineyards deserved the limelight of their own label. They are located in the heart of Minervois country mid-way between Narbonne and Carcassonne, in a region known as Balcon de l'Aude.
