About the wine
From the heart of Gavi DOCG in Piedmont, Villa Sparina sources Cortese grapes from hillside vineyards—on marine-marl soils—hand-harvested for purity and freshness. This wine is widely celebrated as "the Chablis of Italy" for its elegant minerality and precision.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting on the nose, with aromas of white flowers, peach, sweet apple, and lemon zest. The palate is fresh and vibrant, delivering flavours of ripe stone fruit, pineapple, and crisp citrus, underpinned by a delicate sea-salt minerality. A subtle almond note lingers on the clean, refreshing finish, showcasing the Cortese grape’s hallmark elegance and precision.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The crisp acidity, citrus lift, and minerality of this Gavi make it an excellent match for:
Seafood – grilled prawns, calamari, or branzino with lemon and herbs
Shellfish – oysters, clams, mussels in white wine sauce
Light pasta dishes – linguine alle vongole, pasta with fresh basil pesto
Salads & vegetables – tomato and mozzarella salad, grilled courgettes, asparagus with parmesan shavings
Cheeses – young goat’s cheese, mild ricotta, or fresh mozzarella
About the Winemaker
Villa Sparina is a celebrated wine estate located in Monterotondo, at the heart of the Gavi DOCG in Piedmont. Founded in the late 1970s by the Moccagatta family, the estate quickly established itself as a benchmark for the Cortese grape, producing wines of exceptional purity and finesse. The vineyards—spanning roughly 100 hectares—are planted on ancient marl and clay soils, which impart the signature minerality found in their wines.
Villa Sparina is instantly recognisable for its distinctive, rounded wine bottles, inspired by 18th-century shapes discovered on the property. The estate’s philosophy blends tradition and innovation: careful vineyard management, hand harvesting, and gentle winemaking techniques are combined with modern hospitality at their luxury boutique hotel and restaurant, making Villa Sparina both a producer of fine wines and a destination for wine lovers.
