Need an introduction to Merlot? Meet this one… its bold, fun, and unapologetic
About the wine
Since producing their first vintage Merlot in 1983, Rombauer has understood that site and farming are key to exceptional Merlot and Carneros held the answer. With clay soils that are similar to those of the Right Bank and nippy climate, Rombauer's Merlot is like meeting Pomerol's cooler cousin. Rombauer's careful treatment and handling of the thin-skinned grapes to gradually develop flavour and tannin while retaining natural acidity, only intensify this. Need an introduction to Merlot? We think you may be converted after trying this…
Tasting notes
The nose of this wine presents ripe blueberries, plum, and black currant, complemented by subtle notes of cedar, vanilla, and pie crust. On the palate, it evolves with flavours of plums, blueberries, and figs, leading to a vibrant and juicy red fruit finish.
About the winemaker
When founders Koerner and Joan Rombauer moved their two children, two horses and five dogs to Napa Valley in 1972, they arrived armed with an appreciation for the intimate relationship between food and wine. Their appreciation stemmed from Koerner’s great aunt Irma Rombauer having authored internationally renowned cookbook the Joy of Cooking and his ancestors originating from the winegrowing region of Rheingau, Germany, where wine is considered an essential complement to a meal. Appreciation bred passion, and Rombauer Vineyards was established in 1980. Forty years later, the winery remains owned by second- and third-generation members of the family.
