2009 was a truly memorable year in the Bekaa Valley, and is remembered as a vintage of two halves – before and after the rain. A spectacular two-day September deluge – unprecedented since records began in 1870 – almost drowned the vineyard, but the Hochar family have dealt with rains of shrapnel before, so water from the sky is no big deal. Now after a 7-year creation period this vintage has a smokey earthiness that we love. It’s ready to drink, though there’s no need to rush: it’s only going to get better.

The recent history of Lebanon is both turbulent and tragic. But throughout the 15-year Lebanese Civil War – and during more recent periods of conflict – the Hochar family of Château Musar have kept making wines (they only missed two vintages during the entire war, a feat of bravery and tenacity that earned Serge Hochar the inaugural Decanter Man of the Year award). Though their wines have been compared to prestigious Old World regions like Burgundy and Bordeaux they are really a unique product of the Lebanese landscape, using ancient indigenous grapes.
