This bottle is a testament to how terrible conditions can make fantastic wine. A soggy, hail-stormy spring led to a hot summer of near-drought. The oenologist apparently nearly had a heart attack when the grapes came in as they were too warm, which meant careful temperature control and near-daily tastings (it’s a hard life…). But from adversity… triumph! This is intense, spicy but with a mellow finish.
Hourtin-Ducasse is located in the heart of the Haut-Medoc. It’s relatively the baby of all of the Bordelais châteaux and was founded in the 18th-19th centuries by two men, Mr. Hourtin and Mr. Ducasse. The current family is the Marengo family, whose aim is to protect the richness of the terroir, stand by their vines, then raise their wines to make each vintage express all its character.
