Rainbow's End Mystical Corner, 2018, Stellenbosch, South Africa
£19.75 (inc VAT)
Bright, startling and beautiful as a rainbow, who cares what's at the end of it.
Does the name Mystical Corner bring to mind magicians, witchcraft or the occult for you? It did for us. This wine is lovingly handcrafted by the Malan family, high up a mountain on their tiny estate in Stellenbosch. But to be honest we're not entirely convinced that they haven't used some black magic to conjure this up rich, smooth, dark wine at such an unnaturally and astonishingly reasonable price.
This is proper family endeavour. Dr Jacques Malan gave up his practice to pursue his love of wine. Now his son Anton makes the wine and his other son Francois tends the vines of the 22 hectare estate in Stellenbosch. The vineyards rise up from the valley floor to 550m above sea level high up the Jonkershoek Mountain.
