Albert Bichot Les Santenots, Volnay 1er Cru, 2017, Burgundy, France
£79.50 (inc VAT)
Not in Volnay, and no one knows where "Santenots"comes from. Mysterious but delicious.
Contrary to its name, "Les Santenots"is not located in the village of Volnay, but in Meursault, just to the south. Though best known for its white wines, certain terroirs, such as Les Santenots, are perfect for bringing out all the finesse the Pinot Noir grape has to offer. There are lots of potential etymological explanations for the name of the locality, but our favourite is "Sentes" for brambles. Since this is delicately smoky and oaky with spicy notes, and goes great with autumnal meals like roasts and game, "brambles"seems to fit.
Burgundian legends; the Bichot family settled in the region in 1350. The wine business was founded in 1831 by Bernard Bichot, and his son, Hippolyte Bichot, bought the first vines. Clearly deciding that they weren’t going to beat “Hippolyte Bichot” as a name, the next three generations were named Albert Bichot. Now sixth-generation scion Alberic Bichot runs the place with respect for traditions and an eye to the future. He compares himself to the "conductor of an orchestra, proud to bring people and their talents together.”
