Soutiran Cuvée Millésimée Grand Cru Brut, 2012, Champagne, France
£82.00 (inc VAT)
Vintage in every sense; a superlative bottle with a sexy silhouette.
Millésimée means “vintage” (though it’s undoubtedly sexier when you say it in French). 2008 was a great year for Champagne – an unpredictable spring but a wonderful late summer – and it shows in this fruitful, harmonious bottle with a sexy silhouette. Bollinger have 150 hectares and buy grapes from their neighbours; Soutiran have 6 hectares and don’t. Now let’s talk artisanal versus mass-production...
Based in Ambonnay, one of the 17 grand cru villages in Champagne. Valérie and Patrick Renaux are the third generation that began in the Montagne de Reims with Val's grandfather, Gérard Soutiran. Gerard was an orphan raised by a viticulturist who then took over his caretaker's vineyard after a career in the Army. Would you watch that movie? We’d watch that movie.
